　国際平和文化フォーラムr平和ヽの新しいアプローチ」が盛大に開催されますこ
とに心からお喜び申し上げます。
　国際平和文化フォーラムでは、核戦争防止国際医師会議(I P P NW）の副議長
としてノーベル貫を推賞されたエルネスト・カーン博士、ミレニアム平和文化の
使者、ギー・クレキー氏をはじめ、多彩な皆さまをお迎えし、被爆国である我が
国の平和の使命や役割に関して、議論を深められるとおうかがいしております。
　1945年８月9 日11時２分､長崎は原子爆弾により破壊され、一瞬にして街は廃墟
と化し、7万4千人の尊い生命が奪われました。かろうじて生き残った7万5千人の
方々も心身に癒すことのでさない傷を負い、6 5年が過ぎた現在も多くの方々が
放射線の後障害に苦しんでいます。
　被爆から65年を迎える現在まで、毎年、平和祈念式典を開催して、死没者を追
悼するとともに、国内外で原爆展を開催するなど、被爆の惨状を世界に伝え、核
兵器廃絶を世界に訴えてきました。現在も被爆者が多く暮らしている長崎の市民
の平和への願いは強く、被爆地として、平和の取り組みのシンボルの役割を果た
してきたのではないかと思います。
　しかし、被爆者が高齢化していく中で、今後、その熱意をどう受け継いで、被
爆地としての使命と役割を果たしていくか、重要な課題になっています。
　国際平和文化フォーラム「平和への新しいアプローチ」においても、被爆国日
本の使命と役割について意見交換がなされるとおうかがいしております。ご参加
の皆さまが活発な議論を重ねられて、有意義なフォーラムとなることを期待して
おります。　
　今回のフォーラム開催にご尽力いただいた関係者の方に敬意を表しますととも

Message

I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations on the grand holding of the International Peace
Culture Forum "New Approach to Peace".

 I understand that this forum is welcoming by Dr. Ernesto Kahan, former Co-President of International
Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (1PPNW), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
1985, and Mr. Guy Crequie, the messenger of the millennium peace culture, as well as many others and
deepening discussion about the mission and role of Japan in achieving peace as the only nation that has
experienced atomic bombings.

 At two minutes past 11:00am on August 9, 1945, the City of Nagasaki was destroyed by an atomic
bomb, the city devastated in. an instant and some 74,000 precious lives lost. Another 75,000 people who
narrowly survived suffered wounds to their bodies and spirits that can never heal. Even today, after 65
years have passed, many people are still suffering from the aftereffects of radiation exposure.

 Every year since the atomic bombing until today, 65 years later, not only has a peace memorial
ceremony has been held every year to remember the atomic tomb victims, but also atomic bomb
exhibitions and other events have been held both in Japan and overseas to convey to the world the
devastation caused by a nuclear bombing and to appeal to the world to abolish nuclear weapons. The
citizens of Nagasaki, where even today many atomic bombing survivors reside, have a. strong desire for
peace, and as the site of a nuclear bombing the city has, I believe, played a role as a symbol for efforts
towards achieving peace.

 However, as the atomic bombing survivors age, how we are to carry on their passion in the future and
fulfil] our role as an atomic bombing site is becoming a very grave issue.

 1 understand that the mission and role of Japan as the only nation to have experienced atomic
bombings are also being discussed at this forum- I hold high expectations that participants will have
many lively discussions and that the forum will be very meaningful.

 In concluding my' message I wish to salute all those who worked so hard to organize this forum, as
well as wish all participants the best of health and happiness. Thank you.
